Dr. Lihua Lou serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University. Throughout her educational and research journey, she has accumulated substantial expertise in the realm of fiber fabrication and the intricate mechanics of soft materials. As an undergraduate, she delved into the mechanical modeling of fibers, yarns, and fabrics. Her subsequent Master's research at Donghua University revolved around developing nanofiber-based HEPA air filters. It was there that she mastered single-needle and needleless electrospinning techniques, pioneering a unique method to produce nanofibrous membranes, subsequently utilized in automotive filtration, anti-PM2.5 masks, and ambient air purification systems. During her doctoral endeavors at Texas Tech University, her focal point was the conception of functional nanofiber nanoparticle webs oriented towards human health and environmental conservation. Her inaugural postdoctoral stint at Virginia Commonwealth University was directed towards crafting innovative nanofibrous drug delivery mechanisms, particularly targeting drug addiction and ocular ailments. Subsequently, as a postdoctoral associate at Florida International University, she amalgamated her foundational knowledge in nanomaterials with the intricate dynamics of soft material mechanics.
Research Interersts
Her research interests include advanced nanomanufacturing of multifunctional polymer composites (e.g., foams, hydrogels, thin films, nanofibers, yarns) reinforced with 0D, 1D, and 2D materials (e.g., QDs, BNNT, GNP, rGO, TiO2) as well as synthesis, mechanical characterization, and simulation of bioscaffolds (e.g., integrated cardiac myocardium constructs, engineered intervertebral discs, artificial anterior cruciate ligaments, and robotic hands).
